The Dead Weather
Jack White, Jack White! I got to see Detroit native, Jack White! His new super band, the Dead Weather, is fantastic. Lead singer, Allison Mossart from The Kills is such a rock star. They played at The Fillmore Detroit named after the original Fillmore in San Francisco. It's not really the same, but props to Detroit for trying.
Here is an excerpt from Jack White's poem about Detroit, Courageous Dream's Concern:
Detroit, you hold what one's been seeking,
Holding off the coward-armies weakling,
Always rising from the ashes
not returning to the earth.
That in your people's body yearns
To perpetuate,
and permeate,
the lonely dream that does encapsulate,
Your spirit, that God insulates,
With courageous dream's concern.

Grey Gardens
I finally saw Grey Gardens and it's crazy! I have to admit I have always wanted to be a crazy old lady with eccentric costume jewelry, but this takes crazy to a whole new level. Maybe the Beales are not the best role models, but so much fun to watch.
Ridiculous quote from the documentry:
Edith Beale: The cat's going to the bathroom right right in back of my portrait.
Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: God, isn't that awful?
Edith Beale: No, I'm glad he is. I'm glad somebody's doing something he wanted to do.

Detroit Institue of Arts
Kevin and I had a great time at the DIA. My favorite work was the gigantic mural by Diego Rivera. I love to imagine him and Frida Kahlo hanging out in Detroit back in the day. Architect Henry Sheply had a different view on my favorite work saying,
"Unfortunately, the Board of Trustees, in a misguided moment, employed Diego Rivera, the Mexican artist, to execute a series of murals on the walls of the garden. These are harsh in color, scale and composition. They were designed without the slightest thought given to the delicate architecture and ornament. They are quite simply a travesty in the name of art."
Well, everyone has their own opinion.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game
I've some how managed to go to three MLB stadiums this year: SF Giants, Oakland Athletics, and the Detroit Tigers. Nothing can beat the Detroit Tiger's fireworks tribute to Micheal Jackson. Amazing!

Breakfast at the Fly Trap
Kevin and I have already found two amazing places to get breakfast in Detroit: Cafe Muse and The Fly Trap. Although I love the crepes at Cafe Muse, the The Fly Trap has amazing salt and pepper shakers. Here are some shots from this morning's breakfast at the Fly Trap:

Meet Ms. Blank
I've been obsessed with Amanda Blank ever since hearing her on Spank Rock's track, BUMP. She's trashy yet classy and the only person in the world that pull off cigarette earrings. I'm so excited for her upcoming debut album that will feature: M.I.A., Santigold, The Cool Kids, Lykke Li, and Diplo. Two of her tracks have been release and are available for free here.
Also, The Cool Kids have a great free mixed tape available on their MySpace.

Early Morning in Detroit
I now live in Detroit and the city fascinates me. There is a mix of the old wealth and a deterioration of the buildings that provides interesting perspectives. I am going to start working on a Detroit series.

Wilco, Wilco, Wilco will love you baby.
Wilco The Album released on June 30th, and it instantly became a favorite of mine. The album manages to include heavy lyrics, and light-hearted dance songs featuring Feist. I also love how they manged to get a camel for their photo shoot and display the suits they wore at last year's Lollapoolza. The album art is by famed music photographer Autumn de Wilde.
